Brief Profile

More Puerto Ricans reside outside of Puerto Rico than do inside their own country. In fact, the United States is home to the largest population of Pueto Ricans in the world and home to a larger population than what exists in Puerto Rico itself.

Puerto Ricans have their own unique social customs, cultural matrix, historically rooted traditions, and its own unique pronunciation, vocabulary, and idiomatic expressions within the Spanish language, known as Puerto Rican Spanish.

Puerto Ricans often proudly identify themselves as Boricua, derived from the Taíno word Boriken. The word Boriken translates to "the great land of the valiant and noble Lord".

The majority of Puerto Rican people adhere to Roman Catholicism. A small minority are evangelical Protestants.

Prayer Points

  • For God to reveal the truth of salvation through grace alone and not through acts of religious rituals.
  • That existing evangelical churches will recognize that Puerto Ricans are in need of hearing a message of grace through Jesus Christ.
  • That evangelical Puerto Ricans will obey the Great Commission, taking the message to the least reached Spanish speakers in North America and beyond.
